Seoul

Seoul

Seoul is a bustling city where the past, present, and future meet. Like most of its contemporaries in the region, it showcases all the best of the Far East, but with a distinctly Korean flavor. There are many things to do in Seoul—food, culture, shopping, sightseeing, name it and the booming capital of South Korea has it.

Grand Palace Affairs

Having served as the seat of the empire during the Joseon Dynasty, Seoul is home to the Five Grand Palaces of Seoul.

The main palace, Gyeongbukgung, is in the northern part of the city and served as the official residence of the kings. The same palace also served as the seat of the government during the time. Regarded as the most beautiful by the Koreans, it is where you will also find the National Palace Museum, home to well over 40,000 artifacts and other items of interest. A stop to at least this one palace should be part of all Seoul tours.

Changdeokgung, or the East Palace, is set in a park in the Jongno-gu district of the city. Once the favorite of the kingdom’s princes, the grounds today are listed among UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites. Gyeonghuigung, also known as the West Palace, served as a secondary home for the kings, and now houses the Seoul Museum of History.

Deoksugung is one of the more visited palaces and is where you can watch the Changing of the Royal Guard. More than just the palace itself, the road leading up to the gates are lined by tall trees and make for a picturesque scene. Changgyeonggung is the last of the five and once served as the Royal Summer Palace.

Soul Food of Seoul

You are bound to get hungry after all of the sightseeing, and fortunately; eating is one of the best things to do in Seoul.

Korean cuisine saw a recent growth in popularity across the globe, but nothing compares to authentic dishes prepared in the very heart of the country. You will find some of the best eats in Seoul over at Gwangjang Market, specifically along Jeon, Yukhoe, and Mayak Gimbap Alleys.

Another of the most important things to do in Seoul is learn how to make kimchi. This is something you can do at the Seoul Kimchi Academy House. Here, you will learn how to make the perfect jar of kimchi, and the best part is that you get to take it home with you.

Shopping in the Far East

If you still find yourself looking for ideas on what to do in Seoul after the eating and sightseeing, the natural answer is to shop. Get your retail therapy done over at the world-famous Gangnam District, where you will find COEX, one of the region’s largest integrated shopping, entertainment, and cultural complexes.

Myeongdong is the shopping mecca in all of Korea and is where you will find high-end brands with some of the best bargains in the city. Shopping here is an experience you should not miss, so make sure it is on your list of things to do in Seoul.

Seoul is one of the liveliest and most beautiful cities not only in Asia, but the world. Discover why by planning a trip to South Korea’s capital.
